I agree with John, I don't think the CEO survey revealed a shift in requirements for leaders. The two surveys are apples and oranges, the Characteristics of Admired Leaders that Bryn refers to is asking what followers are looking for in leaders and the survey of CEOs is summarizing insights from Chief Executive Officers, a different perspective. It boils down to what do leaders need to do to create a culture for creativity to prosper.

The answer to the question in the title (Leadership Characteristics – A Shift in Requirements?) is no. The answers that have stood the test of time are much better than new ones given by just CEOs.

As the article states, "It is not a case of leaders being more creative themselves. It is more a need for them to recognize how to create a culture of innovation within their teams ...."

And the characteristics needed by the leader to create a culture of innovation are the remaining three of the top answers: forward-looking (visionary), competent, and inspiring.

Excellent article and review of an important study. If one were to unpack or disaggregate 'competence' what would it entail? Creativity, team leadership capacities, excellent public & media speaking skills, others too! Similarly what does global thinking meaning...are these various types thinking skills or are these awareness of global issues, or both. Also, an ability to think non-dualistically using synthesis skills, imo. Curious what others think.

Nice Bryn..agree totally. As an aside, I see courage as a key characteristic, and the biggest reason we fall behind in innovation and creativity.
