How to retain your best employees
Oakville, Ontario - Aug 21, 2007
“Coaching in the workplace is a challenging, difficult and often risky process but nothing else provides greater impact on individual performance improvement
and talent retention.”
Gregg Thompson, President of Bluepoint Leadership Development
It's not going to ease soon. The ever-looming talent crisis, retirement escalations, leadership shortages, and globalization issues are waging war against our organizations. But, despite the outcry and clear statistics, organizations are not engaging their workforce and retaining their talent.
According to Towers Perrin, less than 1 in 5 Canadians are highly engaged at work1 – companies have a vast reserve of untapped potential in their people, but are failing to create the workplace conditions needed to capture that potential. But what can managers and leaders do right now to engage employees and help them reach their full potential?
Gregg Thompson suggests “It's simple...learn to coach. Coaching works to build a vibrant, engaged workforce and drive business results.” In his book, Unleashed!, Gregg unveils the Great Expectations Model of coaching which challenges us to become the kind of person from whom others genuinely want to receive coaching, to create relationships that confront real issues and to engage in performance-changing conversations.
But Gregg points out that the right kind of coaching is key. In fact, Gallup research shows that one of the most critical elements for retaining talent is ensuring that people have a manager who cares about them - people join companies, but they leave managers.2 Gregg says “it takes a special person to focus on another’s career and aspirations, but that’s exactly what a great coach does.”
